Known primarily as the North Tower for being the first tower to be seen in the north-south direction, Morro do Farol was so named because the first Torres lighthouse was built there, in 1912. At that time, it was made of wood, and fell during a heavy storm in 1935.
The current lighthouse is 18 m high, lighting up every eight seconds. It can be seen on clear nights at a distance of eight nautical miles or 12km. Morro is the perfect place to see the natural beauty of the city: from there you can see all the beaches, the towers, Lagoa do Violão, the mountains, the dunes and Ilha dos Lobos. At the foot of the hill, facing the sea, is the cave of Nossa Senhora Aparecida and a source of very pure water.
