Created in order to make room for avant-garde artists, the Aluísio Magalhães Museum of Modern Arts (Mamam) has become a center of reference for modern and contemporary production. Located on the banks of the Capibaribe River, in a 19th century mansion, the museum has hosted exhibitions by some of the most important artists in history such as Pablo Picasso, Francisco Goya, Jean Michel Basquiat and Auguste Rodin.
In its collection, one can find about 830 works divided between paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and photographs. The highlight is the eleven paintings by Vicente do Rego Monteiro, one of the main names of national modernism. Of this total, six paintings were painted during the 1920s, the height of the modernist movement in Brazil. Still belonging to the museum are the series "Scenes of Brazilian Life", by João Câmara, a series of ten canvases and one hundred prints that depict the Vargas period in Brazilian politics.
Visiting hours: Tuesday to Sunday, from 12h to 18h.
