Built by the Italian engineer Filipe Terzio in the reign of Dom Sebastião, on the ruins of an aqueduct of Roman times, he connected the hills where the monastery of Santana and the Castle were located, winning a depression in twenty-one arches.
Above the Arch of Honor there is a set of two sculptures representing, on the north side of São Roque, on the South side of São Sebastião.
It has been classified by IPPAR as a National Monument since 1910.
