By the end of the 19th century, Bram Stoker, an Irish author, was researching European mythology to write his new novel. A horror story involving vampires. Legend has it that he saw in a book a picture of Bran Castle in Transylvania and decided that it would be the ideal place for his main character, Count Dracula, to dwell in. Dracula was published in 1897 and completely transformed the world's perception of Transylvania and Romania.
Bran Castle was built on top of a hill 200 meters in 1212 by Teutonic Knights. Later, the Hungarian King Luis I, in 1377, gave the castle to the Saxons of Brasov, giving them the privilege of building a citadel there.
