The Chapel of the Bones also dates back to the sixteenth century, inserted in the same stylistic line of other chapels of the genre existing in the Country, as in Évora, Faro and Lagos.
Its interior is practically all covered and decorated by more than 1500 human bones, with the exception of the sculpture work of the figure of Christ Crucified dating from the sixteenth century.
Some say, though without any reliable proof, that these bones would be of Jesuit friars who perished in the region.
The Alcantarilha Bones Chapel is attached on the south side of the 16th century Parish Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, in the historical center of the beautiful parish of Alcantarilha, in the middle of the Algarve region.
