The Renaissance also passed here, well visible in the central tank of the garden, with a quadrangular plan with a larger bowl of masks and a smaller one with heads of fauns.
In 1973, following works of painting of the exterior elevations of the cloister, the primitive portal of the Room of the Chapter, of the Manueline period, was uncovered. It should have been entailed when building a new one in the smaller, eighteenth century. The inscription in Latin characters allusive to the episode of "Saint John in the Desert" that the eighteenth century had covered up became visible again.
Nowadays it is owned by Misericórdia of Estremoz, functioning in the cloister's dependencies the Pole of Estremoz of the University of Évora and in the south wing the Living Science Center of Estremoz, an interactive and pedagogic museum dedicated exclusively to Geology.

The Convent of Saint John of Penance, better known as Convent of the Maltezas, was the seat of the nuns' cloister of the Order of Malta from the 16th century. XVI. Its Cloister is the largest of all the convents of the city and shows us Manueline architecture. Each wing has ten arches, subdivided into four twin arches and two simple ones, all sigladas by the masters beds that provided and fondled the stones that constitute them. The stems (central part of the columns) are supported on square bases, whose capitals are indistinctly simple and smooth or with naturalistic motifs. The corbels in the ogive vault, with typically Manueline motifs and with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic motifs, are quite curious and artistically interesting.
