The territory of the current Copacabana was, together with Bello, a territory inhabited by the Niquías Indians, who were exterminated during the conquest led by Marshal Jorge Robledo.

With the arrival of the Spaniards to the Aburrá Valley, the territories were divided. The current territory of Copacabana was called La Tasajera and included the territories of the current municipalities of Donmatías, San Pedro de los Milagros, Belmira, Entrerríos, Girardota, Barbosa and Santo Domingo.

At the end of the 16th century, the place changed its name to Real de Minas Don Juan de Espinosa. Once the bourgeoisie acquired the right over the entire territory of La Tasajera, many were the people who had to flee. The newly displaced decided to form a town in front of La Tasajera, which became known as Nuestra Señora de Copacabana de La Tasajera, currently Copacabana.

In 1717 the parish priest of Copacabana established the parishes of the other territories that were part of La Tasajera, which later allowed the creation of the current towns, hence the nickname of Founder of towns.

Copacabana is erected a municipality in the year 1812.
