A museum with 32,000 samples of marine species will be inaugurated on Tuesday (23) at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), West Zone of Recife. The collection has been collected in the last thirty years and brings rare species of marine fauna and flora that are not even known and are already extinct. The investment in the building and equipment of the museum, which is the only one in the North and Northeast.
The main studies to be performed in the museum will be of taxonomy, which is the identification of species. With the detailed material, it will be possible to improve management techniques, do conservation work and benefit industries such as medicines, which produce medicines against some organisms.
The collection will be used by researchers from Pernambuco and also from other states and even from other countries. “These species, which originated life in the oceans, through them begins the whole web of life, the food chain. From these organisms are taken important substances in the cure of serious diseases such as cancer and AIDS. The pharmaceutical industry uses drugs taken from the marine environment in production, ”said Professor Sigrid Leitão, coordinator of the oceanography department at UFPE.
The samples are stored in glasses. The museum has Brazil's second largest collection of sponges and the third of crustaceans. Other important collections are those of mollusks, starfish and hedgehogs. In fish, there is a fossil of 125 million years. Still on display are the well-known “sea cockroach” and an oversized freshwater shrimp.
