In 1825, the Dutch built a military fort on the Jirek Hill (Rock) and around it the population of Bukittinggi developed. The fort was called "Fuerte de la Roca".
In 1942, the Japanese occupied the island of Sumatra during World War II, and Bukittinggi was chosen by the occupying forces to build an underground base next to the Sianok Gorge, from which the Japanese directed their operations.
Jam Gadang (The Clock Tower), located on Bukittingi's main square, was built in 1926 by military architect Sergeant Gigi Ameh to locate a watch given to Bukittinggi as a gift by the Queen of the Netherlands.
The tower's roof was initially dome-shaped, was later replaced by a Javanese-style trapezoidal roof and, after independence, was replaced by a traditional Minangkabau roof with a shape representing the buffalo horns.
