Founded by Leon Feffer in 1964 under the name House of Culture of Israel, the Center for Jewish Culture is the result of over 35 years of work to spread the culture and strengthen ties between the Jewish and Brazilian communities.
A reference and living space, open to the public, it regularly offers music, theater, cinema, literature, fine arts, photography, dance and education events. It spreads the Jewish cultural heritage and its roots, the culture of peace, coexistence and respect among peoples through activities that promote interactivity, reflection and acceptance among different cultures.
Its mission is to present, question and create Jewish culture from a traditional and Brazilian perspective, in a dynamic relationship with the city of São Paulo, thus contributing to the city's cultural diversity.
In 1992, the institution was recognized as a public utility entity at the federal, state and municipal levels.
Since April 2003, it has been based in a modern 5,000 square meter building, designed by architect Roberto Loeb, located at Rua Oscar Freire 2500, in the Sumaré district. Its shape makes reference to the Torah scroll, the central text of Judaism.
Focused on the interrelationship of Jewish, Israeli, and Brazilian cultures, the Center for Jewish Culture acts openly, reflexively, and systematically as the radiating center of Jewish culture - and its variations - and as a recipient of Brazilian culture. Disseminating Jewish culture and its influence in diverse cultures, integrating Jewish culture and Brazilian culture, contributing to the qualified formation of audiences, including educators, are among its goals.
The program aims to establish exchanges and partnerships with other institutions in Brazil and around the world in order to propose activities with a broad view of Jewish culture, with plurality of discourses, aimed at establishing long-term relationships with the public.
* More than 60,000 people visit the Jewish Culture Center annually with over 10,000 students from public and private schools and 8,000 attending our courses.
