The Vienna Military History Museum (German: Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) is a museum located in Vienna, Austria. Some claim that this is the largest and oldest building in the world built for this purpose. The museum's collection includes one of the world's largest collections of bronze cannons and has a more biased towards Austrian military history from the 16th century until 1945.
The museum is located in the Landstraße district, next to the Belvedere palace. The building was built between 1850 and 1856 at the behest of Emperor Franz Joseph I as a new garrison of the city, after the old one had been destroyed in the revolution of 1848. The architect was Theophil Hansen.
The museum was erected in the center of Arsenal, this being a military complex located in the third district of Vienna, and was originally created for the purpose of being a military museum, besides testamentar great military feats of the empire, as main battles and Austrian leaders. According to the museum's official website, this is the oldest museum in Vienna. The building consists of five main divisions: the main gate, which houses generals' tombs, and four other large sample rooms. A bronze cannon belonging to the museum is located in the outer area of the museum, in the courtyards of Arsenal.
Each of the four exhibition halls has a different proposal on Austrian history, beginning with The Thirty Years War and the Turkish-Ottomans, continuing through the Napoleonic War, World War I and World War II. The museum also has a small exhibition hall where the theme of the exhibition is seasonal. One of the most notable parts of the museum's collection is located in the exhibition hall of World War I, and deals with the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand. The car used by the Archduke is exposed, as is his uniform and the gun used by Gavrilo Princip to shoot, and there is still the litter on which he was pronounced dead.
Another notable museum show is an immense medieval cannon, by Pumhart von Steyr, the maritime model designer of the SMS vessel Viribus Unitis. Among other things, there is also the Austrian maritime flag used in World War I, a French observation balloon, the oldest European battle-plane, L'Intrépide, and the wreckage of SM U-20, a submarine of the Austro-Hungarian Navy sunk in combat in 1918.
In front of the main entrance, the museum exposes a MiG-21 of a Croatian pilot named Rudolf Perešin. The plane was returned to the Croatian military after the wars in Yugoslavia.
