Created in 1878 by the renowned educator Eduardo de la Barra, who in two rooms of the Liceo de Hombres de Valparaíso builds a small museum, the second oldest in Chile and the first regional. As early as 1879, it had a scientific library of 300 volumes of classic works, natural sciences and anthropology and an interesting collection of flora and fauna species collected or donated by the Buenos Aires society.
The violent earthquake that hit Valparaíso in 1906 and the subsequent fire that destroyed the high school, unfortunately irreparably affected the valuable collections that the museum had accumulated. In 1914, it was possible to reorganize again thanks to the support of some citizens of Valparaíso, who donated important collections and scientific works for their library.
Since the years of John Juger Silver, one of its first directors and its most enthusiastic promoter, this building, declared a Historic Monument in 1979, actively collaborates with formal education in the areas of Natural and Anthropological Sciences. Task that is complemented by the permanent links it maintains with educational establishments, both municipalized and subsidized and private, Professional Institutes and regional Universities. A task carried out with the awareness of being the responsible and official depository of the natural and archaeological testimonies of the region, for which it also carries out actions for the protection and study of biodiversity and regional cultural heritage.
At 125 years old, this museum is today installed in the Lyon Palace, in the heart of Valparaíso, built by the German Count Carlos Von Moitke, the same one who built the old Naval Academy. In this Palace he settled definitively in November 1988, after periodically changing headquarters, occupying premises on Avenida Great Britain, the former Feria del Mar, in Playa Ancha and a small house in Viña del Mar. Along with allowing his return to His city of origin, the renewable Loan grant that granted him his stay at the Lyon Palace, allows him to function there at least until the year 2032.

You can enjoy its design corresponding to a Palace with an elegant frontispiece, not without a Victorian flavor, with decorated and well cared interiors, firm construction and vaulted subways, whose workmanship reveals a high technical quality. Large spaces surrounded by walls that end with baroque ornaments characterize its interior, and supporting and ornamental columns that limit a wide scale of access, its front.
The Municipal Gallery of Art currently works in its basement, of remarkable architectural value with vaults and stone and brick walls, as well as its collections of Chilean and foreign Natural, Anthropological Sciences. A didactic room, Specialized Scientific Library, in addition to Temporary Exhibitions and Video exhibitions complete the attractions of this historic museum of Buenos Aires nature.
