The Old Royal Palace is the historical seat of the Bohemian rulers since the 12th century before being able to be moved to the castle, the current headquarters of the offices of the President of the Republic. This palace constitutes an exceptional historical space in which stands out the room Vladislav, the greater secular seat of Medieval Europe.
Historical documents already mention the existence of a wooden palace in the ninth and tenth centuries located in the surroundings where the castle is currently. The foundation of the Romanesque palace dates back, together with the All Saints' Chapel (rebuilt later), in the 12th century, the time of the reign of Soběslav I (from 1135). Two periods of important construction marked the present appearance of the Royal Palace: the works begun in the fourteenth century by Charles IV and the later by Ladislao Jagellón of Bohemia in 1483. It is also worth mentioning the partial reconstruction carried out after a fire in the sixteenth century and the reforms made under the reign of Empress Maria Theresa of Habsburg.
Built under the reign of Ladislao Jagellón between 1492 and 1502, the most stunning space of the Royal Palace is the Vladislao Hall, a majestic hall of ceremonies whose exceptional dimensions surpass everything that had been done before: 13m high, 62m long, 15m width. The court architect Benedikt Ried was able to blend decorative elements of the extravagant Gothic and the first Renaissance period. Its extraordinary ribbed vault frightens its decorative elements in the form of rosettes.
The court's most prestigious events took place in this room: dances, assemblies, coronation ceremonies, royal audiences, tournaments ... the knights could enter directly into the room by the knight's stairs.
Today, the Vladislao Hall hosts the presidential elections and continues to serve as the seat of the most important state ceremonies.
From the Vladislao Room you can reach:
- The outdoor terrace, which offers a magnificent view of the gardens and the district of Malá Strana.
- The All Saints' Chapel, rebuilt in the 16th century and where the tomb of Saint Procope is located.
- The Luis ward, where there are the meeting rooms of Bohemia Chancellery officers and the Imperial Council Chamber.
- The Diet Hall, built in 1541 and modeled after the Vladislao Room. This room served as an enclosure for the meetings of the Diet, offered by the emperor and where it is possible to observe a hierarchical distribution of the stations according to the importance of the voters.
- The Hall of Records (located on the first floor), where the discussions of the Diet were kept. The walls and vault of the entrance are decorated with several shields.
The oldest Romanesque and Gothic spaces of the castle, located in the great Vladislao Hall are also accessible to the public and it is possible to visit a permanent exhibition on the history of Prague Castle.
