Convento de São Francisco is part of a baroque architectural ensemble of exceptional importance, including the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, the Chapel of St. Roque, the cloister and the sacristy. It is located on the Ladeira de São Francisco.
It is the oldest Franciscan convent in Brazil. Its construction began in 1585, with the project of Friar Francisco dos Santos, but was partially destroyed by the Dutch in 1631 and rebuilt in the seventeenth century. In front of the convent there is a cruise worked in sandstone taken from the reefs.
The cloister and sacristy are famous for the series of Portuguese tile panels, with diverse scenes. In the church, sacristy and chapel, the rich wood carving of the ceiling, with coffins containing paintings from the 18th century, stands out. The monastery also has a library with a precious collection of rare works, and in it was installed the first public library of Pernambuco.
