On the same day that Francisco Pizarro founded Lima, he handed over to the Order of Santo Domingo the site that his church occupies today in the Conde de Superunda shred, one block from the Plaza Mayor.
However, the Dominicans Juan de Olías, Alfonso de Montenegro and Tomás de San Martín founded their convent on the site of Diego de Agüero, on the corner of Judíos and Bodegones streets, and it was only in 1541 when they moved to the site that had assigned them.
In the second half of the 16th century, the transformation suffered by all Lima churches began for the Dominican temple. The temples are restructured, the primitive Gothic forms are abandoned, and it is replaced with what has been called the Lima Baroque.
During the time of Independence, the priest Matías Maestro transformed the interior of the Dominican temple by rebuilding practically all its altars. He converts them to the neoclassical style that was in full swing. The master carpenter Jacinto Ortiz and the painter José Sagastizábal helped him in this work.
Address: intersection of the Conde de Superunda and Camaná shreds.
Tel .: (511) 427-6793.
Church: Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 19:30.
Convent: Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00.
At present the Convent occupies a very large space. Although it has had to give a part to the College of Santo Tomás de Aquino that is also run by the priests of the order.
Inside there are long corridors, cloisters and portals that surround three courtyards full of bushes, flowers and bronze fountains forged by the first friars who sheltered its walls. There is also a spacious Renaissance-style Chapter House, an old crypt where members of the order were buried, and a valuable library.
It has an imposing tower sixty meters high, one of the highest in the city. Inside there are three naves, the choir stalls carved in cedar, the Chapels of Rosario and Santa Rosa, which preserve the skulls of Santa Limeña and San Martín de Porres.
The images of Santa Ana, La Virgen y el Niño, San Martín de Tours and Santiago Matamoros also stand out. There is a beautiful sculpture of the reclining Saint Rose, a gift from Pope Clement X, after the saint's canonization.
The chapter house, with baroque carvings, was the place where the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos was founded in 1551.
