It is said that this new church "was built on the site of the current parish church of São Gonçalo". In fact, it is said that this temple remained in the interior of the present until this one is finished.
The launching of the first stone of the church that we know today happened on June 7, 1947. It is noteworthy that "both for the construction of the parish house and for the mother church, money was collected through the romagen, alms and objects offered by the parishioners. These funds began to be collected by Father Porfirio. " However, it was with Father Pita Ferreira, who assumed the destiny of the parish in February 1945, that the work of the parish residence began in July 1946 and of the main church in 1947. These works were completed by the builder Jacinto Fernandes de Gouveia .
The conclusion of the works was evidently at the end of 1958. In "O Jornal", dated January 15, 1959, we read that: "The festivities of the glorious São Gonçalo will take place in the new church, erected by the dynamism of the Rev. Father Manuel Juvenal Pita Ferreira. "
This church "is built the basaltic stone, mostly drawn from the pinnacle area and the Belfry. The stonework is from Câmara de Lobos ". At the time, it was reported that "Mr. Blandy, an important owner of this parish, offered all the stone
necessary for the construction of the new church and its surroundings. "
The present church presents / displays with a simple rectangular plant and in its interior there are several arches in ogivas. The interior walls are covered in pink marble up to about 1,50m high, the Altar-mor is covered in black marble and the floor is covered with stone.
