The Marienkirche, a German church in Marienkirche, is a church in Berlin. It is located on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße (formerly Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße) in the center of Berlin near Alexanderplatz. The exact age of the original church grounds and structure is not known exactly, but was first mentioned in German chronicles in 1292. It is believed that it dates back to the early 13th century. The architecture of the building today consists largely of comparatively modern restoration work carried out in the late 19th century and in the post-war period. The church was originally a Roman Catholic church but has been a Lutheran Protestant church since the Protestant Reformation.
The Marienkirche is the church of the bishop of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Schlesische Oberlausitz. The Berlin Cathedral is under the joint supervision of all member churches of the Union of Evangelical Churches.
The Marienkirche is next to the Nikolaikirche the oldest church in Berlin. The oldest parts of the church are made of granite, but most of it is brick, which gives it its characteristic bright red appearance. This was deliberately copied during the construction of the nearby Berlin City Hall, the Red City Hall. It was badly damaged by Allied bombs during World War II. After the war, the church was in East Berlin and was restored by the East German authorities in the 1950s.
Before the Second World War, the Marienkirche was located in the middle of a densely populated part of the Mitte district and was regularly used as a parish church. After the war, this area was freed from destroyed buildings and today the church stands in the open spaces around Alexanderplatz and is overshadowed by the East Berlin television tower, the television tower.
A striking statue of Martin Luther stands in front of the church. The grave of Field Marshal Otto Christoph von Sparr is also located in the Marienkirche. Carl Hildebrand Freiherr von Canstein, the founder of the oldest Bible Society in the world, the Canstein Bible Institute, was buried here in 1719.
From 1976 to 1992, Christoph Albrecht was mainly organist / choir director of the church.
