Due to its geographical location (heights from 700 to 3491 m.a.s.l.), it protects a great variety of ecosystems such as moors, peatlands, swamps, non-wooded savannas, jaúl forests and cloud forests, the latter consisting mainly of high-altitude oak groves.
Its topography combined with high rainfall, facilitates the presence of more than 150 rivers, providing goods and services for the Costa Rican society. Its water network is of great importance for the generation of hydroelectric energy and the supply of drinking water.
The Park, together with other nearby Protected Wild Areas such as the Chirripó National Park, the Tapantí, the Los Santos Forest Reserve and the Chirripó Indigenous Reserve, constitute an immense biological corridor, which allows species, especially animals, to move altitudinally and longitudinally. in search of food and places to reproduce. In addition, it is considered the largest continuous forest mass in the country that includes the largest concentration of oak trees.
It is located in the Cordillera de Talamanca, in the districts of El Guarco, Jimenéz, Turrialba and Paraiso.
The flora present in the Park is one of the richest and most representative of Costa Rica, as a consequence of speciation and endemism. It has five different life zones: pre-montane very humid forest, pre-montane rain forest, lower montane rain forest, montane forest and subalpine rain forest.
The great variety of ecosystems are home to numerous animal populations, where they manage to stock up on food. For example, the páramo, a rare and unique ecosystem in Central America, has a floristic species called cañuela (Chusquea sp.) Which is the main source of the tapir's diet. Other mammals such as manigordos, tigrillos, the bush lion, mountain goats, pumas, badgers, and saínos, which are in danger of extinction, are located in the Park. In total about 45 species of mammals.
Among the birds we can mention the quetzal, goldfinch, escarchero, collareja pigeon, as well as several species of hummingbirds, ducks, rualdos, toucans and climbers, among others.
