It has 843 arches with more than five arcades and towers of 31 m of height.
From the time of Arab occupation the town of Elvas was supplied by the Well of Alcalá, located near the old Episcopal Palace. However, from the 15th century, due to population increase, the well became insufficient to supply water to the city.
The Amoreira Aqueduct connects the site of Amoreira to the city of Elvas.
It has been classified by IPPAR as a National Monument since 1910.
