The Câmara Cascudo Memorial is a tourist spot in the city of Natal, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. It is located next to the old cathedral.
It aims to honor the greatest historian and folklorist of the state of Rio Grande do Norte and one of the largest in the country. And this monument was the best way to honor Câmara Cascudo and to make people know more about this great artist from Rio Grande do Norte. It was installed on February 10, 1987 in a building dating from the eighteenth century erected to serve as the headquarters of the Royal Treasury and later the Treasury of Finance, located at André de Albuquerque Square in the city of Natal in Rio Grande do Norte.
From its construction until 1955, the building was the headquarters of the Tax Office, an agency of the Ministry of Finance. Between 1955 and 1982, the building housed the Army Headquarters and, until 1987, the Câmara Cascudo Cultural Center. From February 10, 1987 it became the Memorial Câmara Cascudo (initiative of journalist Paulo Macedo), which is since then one of the most visited places by tourists in the city.
The Memorial aims to preserve and publicize the life and work of Luís da Câmara Cascudo, addressing several aspects, especially the private library of Câmara Cascudo, with about 10,000 volumes of subjects such as folklore, religion, history, biographies and novels, also has pictures that depict remarkable moments of the life of Câmara Cascudo. The library is considered "rare" because it has works from the beginning of the last century and books in several languages. Most of the books have Cascudo's own fist notes and authors' dedications.
The building is noteworthy because it has a statue of Câmara Cascudo on one hand in front of its facade.
