Dated from 1766, the Chapel was built after the destruction of the citadel with an explosion in a warehouse, tragedy where more than two thirds of the population perished in 1732.
Adjoined to the beautiful Mother Church of Campo Maior, the Chapel of the Bones of Campo Maior is the second largest of the Country, being the largest in the well-known Church of São Francisco in Évora.
Its interior is fully clad with the bones of the victims of this tragedy, and the pavement dates back to the 20th century.
