Closely related to Prague, the Charles Bridge (14th century) is the symbol of the Czech capital. Built during the Gothic period, the bridge has a gallery of sculptures.
From the tenth century, a wooden bridge crossed the Vltava river in the same place, until the construction of the first bridge of stones of the capital, in the XII century, the bridge of Judit, whose vestiges still are visible (mainly in the point of embarkation of the cruises from Prague Venice, on the side of the Old Town). In February 1342, a violent meltdown destroyed two-thirds of the bridge and that was when Emperor Charles IV ordered the construction of a new bridge that would have his name. The works were directed by the famous architect and court sculptor Petr Parleř, who also participated in the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral. In spite of the successive floods and the partial rehabilitations carried out throughout its history, the bridge became little by little the symbol of the city and one of its main tourist attractions.
On the side of the Old Town, the contemporary Gothic tower of the Charles Bridge at its entrance is decorated by magnificent sculptures, masterpieces by Petr Parleř: thanks to the splendid palace of the artist we can admire the statues of Emperor Charles IV and his son Wenceslas IV, those of St. Vitus, St. Adalbert, St. Sigismund, masters of the kingdom. On the other side, the bridge ends with two towers of different heights: the Judit Tower (the oldest) dates back to the romantic period (12th century) and the highest dating from the 15th century, offers a panoramic view of Prague.
The sculpture gallery on the bridge is exceptional. In ancient times, a wooden ordeal adorned the bridge with the legendary figure of the knight Bruncvík. But it was during the transition from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century that the bridge received religious sculptures, following the model of the Ponte di Sant'Angelo in Rome, forming an extraordinary triumphal road linking both sides of the city, land and sky. The best artists of the time contrubuted in the decoration of the bridge in a context of artistic competition with beautiful results (see the most beautiful works in the photo gallery). In the nineteenth century, other more academic works complete the collection, which had been partially destroyed by floods and artillery triads.
Currently, only copies of the original statues remain. With the increase in the number of tourists, it is increasingly difficult to pass by the Charles Bridge. For this reason, we advise you to wait for the winter months when the snow covers the bridge and creates a romantic, mysterious and enchanting atmosphere.
