The Gresham Palace (in Hungarian: Gresham-palota) is a palace located in Budapest, Hungary, being an example of Art Nouveau architecture in Central Europe. Built in the early 1900s, it currently belongs to an Irish company, Quinlan Private, and is managed by the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.
The palace was formerly occupied by Casa Nako, a neoclassical building built in 1827. In 1880, the London-based Gresham Life Assurance Company bought the property, at a time when it was illegal to invest money in stocks , but leases were a wise investment. The company decided to build its foreign headquarters there, and felt it needed more space for it. They hired local architect Zsigmond Quittner to design the new structure. The construction of the Gresham Palace began in 1904 and was completed in 1906.
Originally the palace served as an office building as well as residence for rich British aristocrats attached to the Gresham Company. During World War II, the Soviet soldiers settled a residence in the extravagant palace. Later, the building was in poor condition, having served as an apartment building during the communist government of Hungary. When democracy was restored, the national government offered the palace to the city of Budapest. In 2001 it was bought by the Four Seasons network, having opened soon afterwards as a luxury hotel. Among the original details restored by Quinlan Private include extensive staircases, stained glass, mosaics, wrought iron works and suspended winter gardens.
The Gresham Palace is a refined example of Art Nouveau architecture, especially in the manner of the secessionists of Vienna. The artists of this movement tried to advance towards the eradication of the ornaments, focusing on the architectural form as the central point of the drawing. The Gresham Palace exemplifies this style with its soft façade, which draws attention above all to the curved line of the roofs, to the raised windows and to the pilasters along the facade of the building. The palace also features beautiful wrought iron works, including two magnificent peacocks at the courtyard gate, which are typical of Art Nouveau ornamentation.
