Formerly this property was part of what is known as "Quinta de Gregorini".
In March 1897, the Irish Catholic Association purchased the land currently occupied by the Santa Brígida School, the Monsignor Dillon School and also the land delimited by the current Gaona streets, Tte street. Gral. Donato Álvarez, Neuquén street, and Seguí street.
This property was used as a paddock usually used for friendly soccer matches, holding many of these encounters within the local soccer league. In 1905 an attempt was made to build a brick kiln, although the Municipality prevented it due to the great complaints of the neighbors. Fifteen years later, in 1920, the Italo Argentino Club del Giocco al Pallone (a famous game similar to paddle ball) was founded on these lands, which would later be transferred to 1225 Heredia Street.
In December 1922, the Municipality of Buenos Aires and at the initiative of Mayor Carlos M. Noel acquired these lands from the Irish Catholic Association. It was inaugurated on October 12, 1927 by the successor mayor, Horacio Casco, with the presence of representatives of the Irish community in Buenos Aires. An investment of 55 million pesos was necessary. Two days later, The Southern Cross, the Irish newspaper founded here in 1875, devoted almost a page to the event, highlighting that the new park ´´s only comparable with the forests of Palermo´´ or ´´with the initiative of Don Torcuato de Alvear, which resulted in the opening of Avenida de Mayo, today our most important downtown artery. "
Among the disappeared nightclubs that gained fame in the vicinity of the Plaza, in Donato Alvarez and Gaona, until the late 1940s there was the César bar and, meters away, another called El Parque.
It has 52,600 m2 of surface. Which makes it one of the largest squares in the City of Buenos Aires. More than 50 botanical species make up the foliage of the square, highlighting the lush grove that surrounds the perimeter of the square and especially the types that make up the side of Gaona avenue along with some species of oaks. Of its species are notable carob trees, pines, drunken sticks, bananas, tipas, palm trees and ash trees. In the '70s the original layout was reformed, opening paths that cut the original grass and a large number of American ash trees were planted. During the Telerman government he received a major reform that allowed the incorporation and improvement of its structure.
It has paths for bike paths with a cement folder that border the square and an aerobic path that runs in parallel. The bike path and the aerobic path were surrounded by shrubs such as abelias, Texan olea, streptosolen and nandins, many of these species have now dried up due to carelessness in their maintenance.
It has sectors with tables at different points in the square. There is also an amphitheater near the side of Neuquén street where activities such as murga practice, gymnastics classes, movie screenings are carried out among the most performed.
In the middle of its side on Neuquén street there is a carousel "de José"
It has two sectors for children's games. It has a public bathroom in front of the Banking Polyclinic.
For a quarter of a century it has been operating in a sector of the square, in front of the Monsignor Dillon Institute building, which is a club for residents and retirees. The hobbies being the game of bocce along with the trick and chess.
Ireland Square is one of the main green spaces in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, located in the Caballito neighborhood.
It is surrounded by Gaona Avenue, Tte. Gral. Donato Álvarez, Neuquén and Seguí. Being the third largest in Buenos Aires.
Its name was given by the ordinance 1427 of 12/30/1925 in homage to the Irish immigrants of the Argentine Republic.
