Maunga Terevaka is, at 512 m high, the highest elevation on the entire island. It can be climbed from Akivi, Anakena or Vaitea. We start the ascent from Vaitea and go down towards Hanga Roa. The ascent takes around 2 hours and the way back takes approx. Three hours.
Coming from Hanga Roa we travel in the direction of Anakena, and more or less halfway we leave the street in Vaitea and turn left, to a track marked as a walking and horseback riding path. The fork in the direction of “Aroi” is impressive due to its location in the middle of a fragrant green eucalyptus forest.
It has several craters, but the peculiarity of this mountain is in the lower part. On its slopes, this volcano has more than 800 caves of lush vegetation, as well as vestiges of centers used for ceremonies, which makes the place a mysterious and adventurous destination for those who visit them. Maunga Terevaka is a place not so frequented by the traditional tourist, but no less interesting. Here you can breathe history, culture and tradition of a very special place that annually attracts thousands of tourists.
