From the twelfth century the pillory constituted symbols of municipal jurisdiction and municipal autonomy, but also of feudal jurisdiction, of the rights of grantees, bishops, and monasteries. The Chamber of Deputies and the judge found in the pillory, as well as in the gallows, instruments for the materialization of their judgment and sanction. For this reason, the pillars represent the order, the peace and the security of the county community, symbolizing the authority and the power to apply Justice.
The Lousadense Pillory consists of a torso, topped by a capital in the shape of an inverted pyramid.

Pelourinho de Lousada is a symbol of administrative authority and marks the most central point of the locality. It constitutes the monument Lousadense cataloged to the highest level. Its honorable classification as "National Monument" dates from the time of the Monarchy, through the Royal Decree of June 16, 1910 and constitutes the only one in the whole county with this category.
