The city of Porto Novo, formerly called Carvoeiro, is the seat of the municipality of the same name. It is the largest urban center of Santo Antão and contains the main port of the island. Studies are underway to build a new aerodrome in the county.
From Porto Novo there is the main road of the island, which following the east coast connects Vila das Pombas, Ribeira Grande and Ponta do Sol. This road joined, in late 2009, the Estrada da Corda, which still connects the municipalities from the northeast of the island crossing the heights of the island.
