The city was founded between 1501 and 1504 by Sikandar Lodi, Sultan of Delhi, who made it its capital. The first Mughal emperor, Babur, took refuge in this city after fighting Lodi in 1526. Akbar became the official capital of the empire in 1556.



Between the mid-sixteenth and mid-seventeenth centuries, during the reigns of Akbar, Jahangir, and Sha Jahan, the city had its heyday and splendor. Sha Jahan ordered the construction of the Taj Mahal in 1631. Later, the empire's capital moved to Delhi.



After the fall of the Mughal Empire, the Jats in 1761, the Gwalior Rajputs in 1764, the Sindhia in 1784 and the British in 1803 resided in the city. During the cipayos revolt of 1857, several bloody battles took place in the fort of Agra.



Agra is a city located on the banks of the Yamuna River in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It was the capital of the Mughal Empire between 1556 and 1658.
