Bonaire was discovered by the Spaniards in 1499 on an expedition led by Alonso de Ojeda and Américo Vespuccio.
The remains of the indigenous population of Bonaire can be seen in some of the island's current inhabitants.
The island of Bonaire (Boneiru in Papiamento) is an island territory of the Netherlands Antilles, which, in turn, form part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the overseas countries and territories of the European Union. It is located in the south of the Caribbean Sea, on the west coast of Venezuela, and is part of the Leeward Islands group of the Lesser Antilles.
Its climate is tropical semi-arid.
