This national park is named after the worthy Dr. Braulio Carillo, a national benefactor and third elected president of Costa Rica. The park is located in one of the regions with the most difficult access in the country, almost all the terrain is made up of mountainous skyscrapers of volcanic origin.
The Park has an evergreen forest vegetation, of great density and floristic complexity. Most of the park is covered by a primary forest, where it is estimated that there are 6,000 species of plants (data from InBio), which represents half of the total number of species in the entire country.
The Park also presents a great diversity of fauna. Among the mammals, the white-faced, red-faced, tapir, puma and jaguar monkeys stand out. The rich birdlife also stands out, represented by almost 515 species of birds, both resident and migratory.
Northeast of the Central Valley, on the Central Volcanic Mountain Range, between the massifs of the Poás and Irazú volcanoes. It includes within its limits the Barva and Cacho Negro volcanoes and the Zurquí hill, extending from Alto de la Palma (Moravia) to the La Selva Biological Station (Sarapiquí). It has two sectors: Quebrada González, adjacent to the San José-Guápiles highway, and Barva Volcano located 4 km from Sacramento in Barva de Heredia.
The vegetation of the park consists of green and thick vegetation, with a very complex structure. The composition of the forest changes depending on environmental conditions, such as terrain, drainage, temperature, and precipitation levels.
Most of the park consists of primary forest, with ancient trees, heliconia, and a large number of palm trees.
Here it is possible to find a lot of wildlife, especially birds. Some of the most common mammals are monkeys, tapirs, jaguars, pumas, deer, porcupines, and sloths.
The Braulio Carillo National Park is located 20 kilometers north-east of San José, the most visited section is to the south of the park, accessible via the highway to the Atlantic coast or through the town of Siquirres.
