Its aborigines were the Cácharas Indians, of the Chibcha family. In 1811, Antonio José del Rincón arrived, who is considered the founder.

Before 1897, Cáchira was a district of the old municipality of San Pedro, elevated to this status on June 15, 1886, by means of ordinance 31, but in 1905 by means of decree 457 of May 16 it was annexed to Ocaña.

It was elevated to a municipality again by ordinance 11 of March 7, 1911.

Its main activity is agriculture, coffee stands out, then curuba, corn, beans, tomato and cocoa.

Bovine cattle stand out in livestock.

December 8: celebration to the Virgin of the Lajita patron saint of the municipality.

July 16: festivities to the Virgen del Carmen.

August 28: festivities to San Agustín in La Vega (patron).

December 5 to 8: livestock exhibition fair, return festival and craft fair.
