Arruda was a town of the Order of Santiago after the conquests of Lisbon and Sintra, constituting the portion of territory north of the Tagus owned by that institution. By the end of century XII, the locality had castle, fact that would have been in origin of the interest of the Espatários, that well they began to control an important northern access to Lisbon. The date of construction of the primitive church is not known, but it is supposed to have occurred in the first decades of the thirteenth century, when, on the south side of the Tagus, the knights of Santiago developed the first projects of population organization and economic profitability .
It has been classified as Property of Public Interest, since the year 1944.
