Located in one of the oldest sections of Winnipeg, Dalnavert shows an era of wealth and decadence, with sparkling stained glass, rich wood paneling and Victorian antiques. It was built in 1895 for Sir Hugh John Macdonald, Premier of Manitoba in 1900, and son of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald.
Dalnavert was rescued from demolition by the Manitoba Historical Society in 1969 and has been meticulously restored. Dalnavert is one of Western Canada's finest examples of Queen Anne Revival Architecture and has been recognized as a Municipal, Provincial, and National Historic Site. Dalnavert has been operating as a museum since 1974 to the present, offering a variety of programs including guided tours, school field trips, and seasonal exhibits and theatrical performances.
The objective of Dalnavert Museum is to foster an appreciation and understanding of the late Victorian era in Winnipeg, through the preservation, exhibition and interpretation of the building and the museum's collection. Dalnavert promotes an engagement with Winnipeg's past through its immersing setting, touching on various topics including labor history, political history, and civic history. The museum encourages visitors to learn about the past and compare it to our lives in the present.
