Fajã da Ribeira da Areia is quite large and was once very inhabited. In the year 1891 it had more than 450 inhabitants. This, like other fajãs on the island of São Jorge, were practically abandoned, mainly because of the 1980 earthquake, but also because of the aging population and the lack of interest of young people in continuing to live there.
One of its main attractions these days is its natural arch in basaltic lava.
