Paradoxically, the lagoon that may be attractive but representative of Guatavita, geographically and legally belongs to Sesquile, because these lands have been ceded for many years. It is located in the department of Cundinamarca about 59 km northeast of Bogotá. In the eastern mountain range, in one of the points from where it reaches the largest anchorage, with an area of ​​613 hectares.



The heights recorded in the reserve vary between 2,880 meters above sea level in the extreme southwest and 3,200 meters above sea level approximately in the center of the reserve. The highest part of the lagoon reaches a height of 3,080 min.-m.



This is within the cold thermal floor, the average temperature in this municipality is 13º C, with an average maximum of 15º C and a minimum of 10º C.



The lagoon has a semicircular shape (400m x 300m) and is located in a regular depression with slopes ranging from 32º to 38º. Its volume of water has been calculated in millions of cubic meters and it has an average depth of 25 meters.

Currently due to the successive and growing degradation of the area, the Regional Autonomous Corporation CAR needs to close the area for the entrance of visitors, but also actions with the implementation of a public use plan that allows improving conditions and activities. administration and management of the area and strengthen institutional capacity.
