The square was the setting for the founding of Villa Santa Cruz de Triana. The square is surrounded by buildings such as the city's Cathedral, the illustrious municipality of Rancagua and the Cachapoal Government. The initiative to create the plaza was established in a code of Instructions, stipulated due to the need to create towns between Santiago and Concepción, in which they spoke of the creation of a plaza. Therefore, on October 5, 1743, the town of Santa Cruz de Triana was founded. The town had a total of 8 blocks, where each one was divided into 4, so the Plaza was built in the four central lots, which at that time was the only one in the country. In the square, the well-known battle of Rancagua took place on the first day of October 1814, as a result of the deterioration in which it was submerged after the death of the battle, it was involved in a series of modifications throughout of the XIX century, which had to comply with a program dedicated to the architectural advancement of the city.
