The origin of the Huando population dates back to pre-Inca times, the first settlers came from groups that wandered through the area. They found a spring of salty water, which they gave the name cachicuyao, which means “beloved salt”, settling in the area.
These first settlers would be tribes that fled from Cuzco to the north, who, crossing the Apurímac River, reached Huando through Ayacucho. They may have been followers of Ayar Cachi, who escaped from Cuzco when they were dominated by Manco Cápac. They were located at the top of the hill, which they called Punco Pitecc (main gate), these inhabitants multiplied under the name of tribes of the Cachis, then the neighboring hills, Gerca Pata (today Jircapata) and Sacha Urcco de Huando, occupied the hills.
Viceroy Toledo in the city of Huamanga, dictates on January 5, 1571, a series of Providences for the founding of cities. The Spanish foundation of Huando was bequeathed on June 1, 1571 with the name of Santísima Trinidad de Huando by Don Jerónimo de Silva. It is worth mentioning that the city of Huancavelica was founded on August 5, 1572.
Due to the founding of the town of Huando, the buildings of Gerca Pata, a pre-Inca town, have been destroyed and the stones have been used as foundations for new buildings, such as the Temple of the Cural house, the Great Municipal Council and other buildings. .
By virtue of Law 25197, Huando was annexed to the Province of Tayacaja, Andrés A. Cáceres Region. It currently belongs to the Province of Huancavelica according to the ruling of November 11, 1999 of the Constitutional Court.
The District of Huando is located in the northern cone of the department of Huancavelica, on the right bank of the Mantaro River, and south east of the Ichu River, in the Central Sierra of Peru, Huancavelica Province.
The Huando district limits:
• To the north with the District of Izcuchaca, province of Tajacaja
• To the south, with the District of Palca, province of Huancavelica
• To the east with the District of Acoria, Mariscal Cáceres and Huancavelica province
• To the west, with the Districts of Laria and Nuevo Occoro, Huancavelica province
HUANDO has several tourist places, which make this city a cozy and safe place to enjoy pleasant moments with family and friends. This potential has recently been considered a means of development for the district and has as its main attractions:
• Cerro Ccakarayacc, which means open mouth, from which you can have a panoramic view of the entire city
• Las Lagunas de Ampatoccocha, which means frog-shaped lagoons
• Laguna de Allccaccocha, which means 2-color lagoon, it is located at more than 4500 m.s.n.m.
• The waterfall called the Veil of the Bride, which is found on the way to the Allccaccocha lagoon; Its waterfall is formed by 2 springs, one of hot springs and the other of cold water
• The archaeological remains of Lacarayacc, Sachamarca and Sapraya
Rural tourism is a nascent option that high Andean communities must develop for the benefit of their inhabitants, since the economy of their locality can improve, this activity would generate new jobs and additional income for the area, which together with traditional activities such as agriculture, livestock, would put a brake on migration from the countryside to the city.
