It comprises 9,553.5 hectares at altitudes between 800 and 2,100 meters. 7,530 hectares belong to the Nature Sanctuary and the remaining 2,002 to the National Reserve, which were incorporated thanks to the contribution of the Zoological Society.



Its purpose is to protect the last huemul population of Central Chile. This is a heraldic mammal, an endangered Andean deer that formerly inhabited from the Cachapoal River to the south.



In these lands there are 121 species of plant type, and among the diversity of altitude, live a large number of animal species; 26 mammals, 49 birds, 7 reptiles and 4 amphibians



It is located in the High Andean mountain range of the commune of Coihueco

The Huemul Sanctuary, a place that has amazed hundreds of its visitors who can, in an environment surrounded by Chilean birds and with pristine rivers, learn a little more about our heraldic animal and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the place.



In addition to protecting endangered species, such as the condor, black woodpecker, pigeon and colocolo cats, among other species of fauna, oak and lenga forests are also preserved in this area.
