Precisely on the corners with the latter are the entrances to the Buenos Aires Zoo and the La Rural Argentina property.
In its center is located the Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi, inaugurated on June 19, 1904 in a ceremony attended by Julio Argentino Roca and Bartolomé Miter. The mateos, horse carriages that carry out tourist rides, park around the square. It is also a terminal for several bus lines.
In it is the Plaza Italia station, a station that is part of line D of the subway network of the City of Buenos Aires.
Also, in the corner near the property belonging to the Sociedad Rural Argentina, there is an original column of the Roman Forum, donated by the Municipality of Rome. With more than 2000 years, it is the oldest monument in Buenos Aires, and probably the oldest architectural work.
Formerly it was called Plaza de los Portones, due to two huge gates located at the entrance of the current Sarmiento Avenue, but from an ordinance of the Municipality of Buenos Aires in 1909 it received its current name.
From there the first electric tram that the city of Buenos Aires had started in 1894. This fact is remembered with a small mosaic, placed by the Friends of the Tram Association, located on Santa Fe Avenue, on the northeast side.
Plaza Italia is located on Avenida Santa Fe at 4000, in the Palermo neighborhood, marking the place where Avenida Sarmiento ends.
It is one of the places with the greatest movement of people and transportation in the entire city of Buenos Aires.
