The urban complex of Liérganes was declared of national historical and artistic interest in 1978, concentrating a valuable classicist architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries, the fruit of the economic boom that the artillery factory provided in that period in the region.
The urban nucleus is established at the foot of two small elevations: Marimón and Cotillamón (popularly known as "Las Tetas de Liérganes" because of their anthropomorphic similarity).
Lérganes and its history are linked to the legend of Man-Fish, which like all legends has something real (its protagonist, Francisco de la Vega) and some fiction (its varied end). Francisco de la Vega was born in the city in 1660 and, after throwing himself in the river Miera, disappeared in the Bay of Biscay. They say that it was located years later, it lost the reason and the speech, in the bay of Cadiz.
