It was declared a National Park on January 18, 1996 and is located between the provinces of Tungurahua, Cotopaxi, Napo and Pastaza. This nature reserve is a wonderful refuge for wildlife, as well as the water tank, the gene bank and the concentration of biodiversity. Several entrance trails to this National Park start from Patate, especially from the El Triunfo sector.

Due to its difficult access, it preserves its flora and fauna almost intact. Until recently it only attracted risky adventurers who were looking for the treasure of Atahualpa, but today they are visitors who seek to study the plants of its scientists and birds.
