July 10, 1879: the ship El Resguardo arrives. In its dome there were pictures of the Virgen del Carmen and San Miguel Arcángel. From the first moment, the image of the Virgen del Carmen, betrayed from Villa Occidental, accompanied the new town of Formosa: the inhabitants manifested their devotion to the said Virgin. As a result of this popular fervor, it was decided to impose the name "Nuestra Señora del Carmen" on a small and precarious sanctuary built on the banks of the Paraguay River. Father Lycnch and Cabrera celebrated Mass and preached under an umbrella, since they did not have a temple to house a certain number of people.

A little later, the Sanctuary was transferred to a temporary chapel, a poor ranch, without doors on the banks, empty and sucked, because the animals used it as a refuge. According to the ancient settlers, in 1948 the remains of this hermitage are found where the Police Station of the Province (Saavedra and Moreno) is located.

In 1896 the new Temple (Av. 25 de Mayo y Moreno) was built for its construction. Much land was not paid for, but the owner (Manuel Martini) authorized the start of the works.

In 1898, Father Gabriel Grotti blessed the new facilities, still unfinished, in the new Temple.

In March 1899, the Temple was qualified "only to decide Masses on feast days." The different sacraments were administered in the Chapel of the Franciscan priests who were located in the so-called Belgrano and Príngles.





The Iglesia Catedral Nuestra Señora del Carmen is a church located in Formosa, Argentina.



Also with new features, the large round stained glass window that was placed on the façade was restored by the glazier Luciano Durante. The work, 2.85 m in diameter, is made of all imported glass.
