Piura, cheerful and singing, was the first city founded in Peru by Francisco Pizarro in 1532. Today it is an important center of economic development in the north of the country. 12 km from the city is Catacaos, famous for its straw and cotton handicrafts, gold and silver filigree objects and exquisite restaurants. The department of Piura has a varied geography.
