The construction of the Polanco Elevator was carried out by the Cerro Polanco Elevator Company, with a capital of 250,000 pesos. Back then, 1916, the cars had capacity for 28 passengers.
The Valparaíso municipality expropriated the elevator, since its former owners do not show interest in exploiting it, after a malfunction that paralyzed it. This expropriation was carried out after December 21, 1976 was declared a national monument.
Before its stoppage, the elevator only worked until its intermediate station, since as a result of an accident, the bridge that connected the upper part of the tower with the hill had been closed.The restoration was in charge of the project management of the municipality, whose head was the architect Harken Jensen and was coordinated by the architect Enrique Colombo.
The work also included the improvement of the urban environment of Simpson Street, which required an investment of more than 12 million pesos. The architect Fernando Senerman, was in charge of repairing the surroundings of the Polanco Elevator, that is to say, Calle Simpson el work was done in stone, always taking care to present his clean face to the outside.
