In 1801, Alexander von Humbolt drew an official sketch of the place then known as Remolino Grande in the region of today Puerto Berrío. Later, the Cuban engineer Francisco Javier Cisneros, builder of the Antioquia Railroad, would select this same place to build a port for the department of Antioquia, Colombia, on the Magdalena River, in order to bring the railroad there and build a final station.

In 1875, the government of Antioquia decreed the place as an administrative fraction and port in honor of the ruler that Antioquia had at that time, who was then General Pedro Justo Berrío. Subsequently, through a governmental act of that year, the port received the official name of Puerto Berrío.

The fate of Puerto Berrío was consequently linked to the railroad. With the arrival of the first train to Medellín in 1914, a boost was generated to the railroad and a greater use of the port by ships that moved cargo and passengers to the north coast or to the interior of the country.

In 1925, a fire devastated the entire population, except for the railway facilities. The town was rebuilt, and a golden age began for the town. Puerto Berrío became the epicenter of regional commerce and a mandatory place for the transit of cargo, passengers and tourists. This economic boom lasted until 1963, when the Antioquia Railroad was nationalized and joined the Coastal Railroad and the Pacific Railroad.

In 1991, the Rio Grande de La Magdalena Corporation was created with constitutional status, with the purpose of recovering the navigability of the river.

Currently, it is an intermediate city of great commercial movement, and considered as the capital of the Magdalena Medio Antioquia, with a history linked to the Magdalena River and the Antioquia Railroad. Its condition as a multimodal port, the possibility of connecting with Medellín, Bogotá, Bucaramanga and the cities of the Caribbean Coast by land, and its airport have been decisive in the development of the region. The majestic Hotel Magdalena, well restored as a witness to more than 125 years of history, and the exuberant natural attractions, are its most precious tourist treasures to date.

Currently, in conjunction with the Antioquia government, a tourism project is being developed that aims to help the municipality's economy and preserve forests and streams in the region.





Puerto Berrío is a municipality in Colombia, located in the Magdalena Medio subregion of the department of Antioquia. It limits to the north with the municipalities of Yolombó, Remedios and Yondó, to the east with the department of Santander, to the south with the municipalities of Puerto Nare and Caracolí, and to the west with the municipalities of Caracolí and Maceo. Its head is 191 kilometers from the city of Medellín, capital of Antioquia. The municipality has an area of ​​1,184 square kilometers.

It has three townships, Minas del Vapor, El Brasil both on the Magdalena trunk, have a chapel, and Virginias, which is located near Caracolí and 29 trails. It is connected by road with the municipalities of Remedios, Yondó, Puerto Nare and Maceo, and with the town of Cimitarra. It is a river port on the Magdalena River.

Origin of the name: Puerto Berrío was baptized in homage to Governor Pedro Justo Berrío. It was initially called Big Whirlpool.
