Apartadó, its name in indigenous dialect translates Río del Plátano, Pata: Plátano, and Do: Río.
Apartadó was born as a result of the colonization caused with the opening of the highway to the Caribbean Sea of Antioquia, and with the political persecution that took place in Colombia from 1948, after the assassination of the leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán. Although the founding of the town dates back to 1907, the formal initiation of the community dates more precisely from 1949, a year after the political persecution began. Years later, the place became a police post installed by the Turbo municipality in 1965. From then on, that initial police post became a district of this same Turbo district.
Officially, Apartadó was born by ordinance No. 7 of November 30, 1967. Thus, his municipal life began in 1968, son of the municipality of Turbo and brother of the neighboring municipalities of Necoclí, Arboletes, San Pedro de Urabá, Carepa and Chigorodó, all part of the territory known as Urabá Antioqueño.
Currently, in 2007, Apartadó is a municipality with more than 110 thousand inhabitants, where a diverse cultural mix that brings together Afro-descendants, paisas and indigenous people converges on a plain that is part of the Colombian Caribbean. It is considered the second municipality of Urabá Antioqueño after Turbo, due to its commercial activity and its infrastructure. It is surrounded by huge banana and banana plantations, the same ones that represent the main line of the region's economy and, in recent years, it has had an accelerated growth towards agrotourism.
