It is known that the area of the quinta was hunting ground of the Portuguese royal family since at least the fourteenth century. Queen D. Isabel, wife of D. Dinis, acquired the land from two natural springs in the area of the farm to bring water to the Monastery of Santa Clara, which the queen had founded nearby. One of the springs of water still has access by a gothic ogival arch, dating from the fourteenth century.
The primitive name of the area was Quinta do Pombal, gaining the present name only in century XVIII.
Pedro and Inês
Tradition and literature strongly associate the story of Pedro and Inês with Quinta das Lágrimas. It is said that the fifth was the scene of the forbidden loves of Prince D. Pedro (future Pedro I of Portugal) and Ines de Castro, a Galician noblewoman who served as companion to his wife D. Constança. D. Ines ended up murdered by gentlemen whom King Afonso IV had ordered her death. The tears shed by Inês and the people in her memory inspired Luís de Camões to create the name Fonte de Tears and many other writers to consecrate the eternal love of Pedro and Inês.
Quinta das Lágrimas is a farmhouse located on the left bank of the Mondego, at the Santa Clara freguesia in Coimbra, Portugal. The farm occupies an area of 18.3 ha around a 19th century palace currently dedicated to luxury hotels.
