The Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, in the Italian region of Umbria, is the mother church of the Franciscan Order and a World Heritage Site since 2000.

On the day of Pentecost, on May 25, 1230, Francis's body was brought to the scene. The construction of the upper basilica began shortly after 1239 and was completed in 1253. Its architecture is a synthesis of Romanesque and Italian Gothic. The churches were decorated by the greatest artists of that time, coming from Rome, Tuscany and Umbria. The lower church has frescoes of Cimabue and Giotto; in the upper church is a series of frescoes with scenes from the life of St. Francis, also attributed to Giotto and his followers. The Conventual Franciscan friars are the guardians of the remains of the Saint of Assisi.
