Formerly it was considered a feminine divinity by the
natives of the area, who called her Shina and identified her with beauty and
fecundity of her due to the great quantity of fish and shellfish of the coast of her; thanks
to this, she played the important economic role of maintaining the
ancient populations settled on the coast of Callao.
The largest and highest in Peru. It is 8 km long by 2.2
km wide.
The archaeologist Max Uhle found in the extreme south of the island a dacha destined
to the veneration of the moon and a necropolis with more than three thousand tombs
which also contained utensils, fabrics and objects made of gold and
silver.
It is also known as "Mysterious Island" due to the fascinating stories
of pirates, hidden treasures and historical remains that are woven around it.
In the place are the remains of the Dutch pirate Jacobo L’Hemite and
other 19th century characters. There are also eight cemeteries where they lie
the remains of Chilean soldiers who died in the War of the Pacific.
