It constitutes an elevation of great geological interest, due to its permanent volcanic activity with the presence of fumaroles, eruptions and fiery lava flows. At night it offers natural displays similar to fireworks which are observable even from El Puyo.

The Sangay is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. A symmetrical cone and steeply sloping flanks give it a look that surely also makes it among the most photographed. Impressive pictures are obtained from the east and, during the nights of its volcanic activity.

Extension

The central crater has a diameter of 100 m and a depth of 50 m, to the northeast another crater with a diameter of 50 m and a third to the west of the main crater of 100 m in diameter. It is 5,230 meters high.

Its minimum temperature is 13 degrees Celsius and the maximum is 32 degrees Celsius.

It is located in the Province of Morona Santiago 30 kilometers from Macas



Fauna

Regarding the fauna we can witness species such as: moor wolf, cervicabra, spectacled bear, mountain tapir, eastern tapir, anteater, deer, puma. Among the birds were



The torrent and common ducks, the Andean seagull, the curiquingue, and the majestic condor stand out.

Flora

Among the outstanding species we have: Pumamaqui, alder, lycopodia, chuquiraguas, gentians, neurolepis, achupallas and pajonal; and a great variety of orchids and bromeliads.



geology

This volcano is mainly made up of andesites and basaltic andesites. The deposits are made up of olivine, magnesian, augite, hypersthene and plagioclase.

Volcanic activity

Rockfalls, pyroclastic flows, lava emissions, ash columns and gases are documented. Seismic activity is frequent. In the past, large lahars ran around the cone and the natural drainage has changed many times as a result.

Attractive

• Ascensionism: The ascent to the Sangay Volcano is always a challenge,

due to its constant volcanic activity and difficult access.

• Hike: From the town of Alao there are approximately 12 hours of walking to the sector called Yanayacu, from where it takes approximately 5 more hours of walking to reach the sector known as La Playa, from this site the ascent to the volcano begins, always in the early hours of the morning.

• Craters: The Sangay has a gigantic cone at the top with three deep craters; the mud flow it generates has created new ecological niches.

Tourist activities

Among the activities that tourists can do inside the volcano we have: trekking, camping, sport fishing, observation of flora and fauna, photography, among others.
